Subject:Early chinese bronze items (Shang to Han?)
Posted By: adam Tue, Jul 17, 2012 IP: 82.6.71.112

Anyone have any idea what these items are.. They are about 15 inches long.....
Marked as early chinese but the dragons look slightly european to me...
Really need advice as to what dynasty (stylistically) the dragons belong to....
My best guess is some kind of chariot fitting, but any advice appreciated...

Were these not posted recently? Still look like European fittings for lamp.

On another look they look possibly S.E Asian..
Although marked as chinese in the effects sale, there is also an early khmer culture blade, So I am thinking possibly Cambodian or Thai.
Dont know if they are dragon snakes or if they have just altered dragons to fit the job required (as with the flames)

Have you considered caligraphy brush rests? They would certainly work, and accomodate three brushes. I have a carved ivory dragon rest for two brushes, five inches long, but I have seen longer rests that still only accomodate two brushes. Just a thought, Jim

Thanks for all the comments guys...
On looking at the style of the dragon I am thinking possibly SE Asian or a later dynasty, maybe Tang.
Appear to have extreme corrosion for that age though.(Was the extent of corrosion that made me think shang onwards, that and the chariot possibility)

I think SEAsian is the right track. these dragons don't look like any Chinese versions I've seen, and are most likely not chariot fittings, which in China were typically functional items such as axle caps or joinery hardware, whereas these appear purely decorative

Likely Cal was thinking of the bronze dragons in the link below. There may have been another pair recently that my quick search didn't reveal. I've always found Cal very cogent.

Cheers,
Stan
