Subject:ming or qing embroidered panel
Posted By: Michael Wed, Aug 01, 2012 IP: 68.104.112.240

Hello,
Could someone please help me to date this item. Embroiderd silk, Roughly 3x4 feet, mounted on ends to carved wood. Qilin looks Qing to me but has some attributes of Ming style. Would this be considered a Kesi panel or part of?
Thanks in advance,
Michael

This is an embroidery rather than a Kesi panel. Kesi is tapestry weave whereas embroidery is needlework on a pre-woven foundation.

Is "hundred boys" theme auspicious wishing 'many sons' plus central deity riding a kylin. Sometimes Guanyin (derived from Buddhist deity Avalokitesvara) shown riding a kylin, but I am not sure about if that what image supposed to be. Guanyin very popular deity as dispensing many blessings.

Your embroidery probably 2nd quarter 20th century or late first quarter, could have been wedding present. "Kesi" is woven tapestry, not embroidery.

Can preserve this best by remove from any backing and keep in acid-free environment and out of direct light to deter further fading.

Good luck,
Cal

Definitely not Kesi. See link below for an example of kesi fabric.

Cheers,
Stan
