Subject:White Porcelain or Glass Chinese Horse ?
Posted By: msinfobooks Mon, Sep 17, 2012 IP: 99.133.163.125

The small sitting porcelain horse bears a partial paper label that reads Hong Kong. The 5.5" horse has a very high gloss surface but the interior has a satin or bisque finish (like very fine porcelain although it looks like glass from the outside). Is this Chinese or European? I have owned both at least 20 years and purchased them at different garage sales.

The large one has a hole in the base, which being an earmark of slip-casting probably indicates the piece is porcelain. The smaller one has more of a look of glazed porcelain than glass look to me. Most porcelain pieces of such shape would be hollow, so should be lighter than the same size figure made of glass.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Thanks. I have sold lots of pottery and porcelain over the years but never had a piece like the large horse with such a glossy surface. Do you think it is Chinese?

The smaller one is in a Chinese pose but the tack on the larger one looks a bit alien to China. On the other hand, the Chinese seem to be making something to fit almost every niche in the collectibles market these days, so China would be high on my list of guesstimates for origin. Japan is the runner-up, and Mexico is a close third.

Best regards,

Bill H.
