Subject:Bronze Tiger mark (Japanese?)
Posted By: Kaede89 Tue, Dec 11, 2012 IP: 82.151.244.254

I inherited a bronze tiger (15 inch long) from my great Aunt and I would love to know more about it!
Could anyone tell me what the mark means?

The famous bronze tigers were made in the meiji era, normally by seiya/ seika.
They are worth £300-800 depending on condition and size.
Are the eyes and teeth made of bronze, or ivory and glass?
Nice pieces generally,

The mark, shown on its side 90-degrees to the right, looks to be "Cast by Seiya" (Seiya Chu). I don't collect Japanese bronzes but presume this may be a mark of Genryusai Seiya, a bronzesmith of the Meiji period (1868-1912).

Best regards,

Bill H.
