Subject:Blanc de Chine Buddha
Posted By: Toan Sat, Jan 12, 2013 IP: 86.178.139.10

Hi there
Please advise on the age of this Blanc de Chine laughing Buddha
He seemed to have been made in two parts front and back, then joint together prior to firing
The wooden stand also fit perfectly
I guessed that he was made in the 18th/19th century but not sure
Kind regards
Toan

I do not know from when this is, but Dehua started using gypsum molds in the mid 1930s. Any figurines made by putting a front and back molded half together may be from then or later, as far as I know.
Usually, with older figurines the impressions of fingers should be visible inside, as they were hand-formed, and small cracks sometimes too. The interior was not glazed.

Dear Peter
Many thanks for your advise
Following this post I have done some research of my own and found out that my Buddha stature was not made in 2 parts but what I SAW WAS KILN FAULT( in side at the top)
I also came across another statture of Laughing Buddha at Bonhams site which showed inside glazing and similar kiln fault like this stature

I am not by all mean arguing that this stature of mine is old or antique but simply engage in dicussion of how to date Blanc De Chine and you advice is greatly appreaciated
Kind regards
Toan

I live in Dehua, and I don't think it is Dehua blanc de chine, because the artwork is quite different from the typical Dehua blanc de chine.Maybe Fuzhou or even Japan
