Subject:Imari Cow creamer - I would appreciate any advice
Posted By: Tom Sat, Mar 30, 2013 IP: 95.160.69.206

Hi
I just bought that funny Imari Cow creamer. Decorated in red and blue enamels flowers and standing on a big blue base. Japanese or Chinese?
A good and clean example, probably on the English market. Cow creamer too good so I wonder if is old.

Anyone recognized these maker's marks? I would appreciate any advice.

Best regards
Tom

Your creamer's mark reads down from the right in two stacks as "Made for the Hall of Righteous Modesty in the Year of the Dragon" (Yi Qian Tang Long Nian Zhi).

This is example of contemporary transfer-decorated ware of a type produced in Hong Kong and Macao. A couple of fishbowls with the same mark have come up in the forum in the past few years.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Chinese piece. Gotheborg website has some info about this company. Scroll down to the "Factory Names" heading on that website.

Keyword: 義謙堂, yi qian tang

URL Title :Gotheborg (Yi Qian Tang Seal)

I found the answer on http://gotheborg.com/marks/index-china-marks.htm who seeks ;-) Another mystery solved.

767. Yi Qian Tang (factory name) Long Nian Zhi (Made in the year of the Dragon). Likely to be from the 1980's.

The porcelain figure are likely to have been made in China and decorated at the Overjoy Porcelain Factory or maybe at Ah Chou Factory (The owners of the 2 factories are related). These two porcelain decoration 'factories' specialized in decorating blank porcelain dinnerware and objects, such as the cats, flower pots, vases, candlesticks, etc., mainly for foreign "expats" who had moved to Hong Kong. The blanks for the dinnerware came from Japan, while the blanks for the other objects usually came from China. There are sample patterns, or customers can make up their own design, or the factories will also copy any pattern the customer prefers. They were proud of the fact that the enamels for decorating their wares all came from Germany, thus were safe vis a vis food consumption, unlike some of the dinnerware from China. The blue that's painted on this cat is the standard dark non-cobalt blue that they used, and still do use. If one wanted they also had a lighter cobalt blue. Info submitted by: Sarah Parnell, 2003
