Subject:Trying to ID Pattern & Utility of Japanese Bowl
Posted By: Bill H Fri, Apr 12, 2013 IP: 98.82.77.126

I thought I had this Japanese pedestal bowl pegged as a haisen or cup-washer, but after bringing it home and comparing measurements, at almost 8.5 inches in diameter, it seems to be more than a bit larger than your average haisen. I also thought it would be a snap to find what the pattern is called, because I recalled seeing something similar to the pair of figures with big hair and weird sinuous arms, if they are arms. Anyway, all input will be appreciated.

Thanks,

Bill H.

Just a side note. There's an Arita haisen bowl, which has a similar shape to your piece. Is it a coincident?

URL Title :Similar haisen bowl (in form)

Y.E., thanks for the input. I Googled around with those characters for quite some time myself last night and didn't come up with any this close to mine on the Japanese websites. Your help is most appreciated.

Thanks,

Bill H.

I didn't forget this item... I'm using this keyword in Google Japan.

Thanks, I'll have to read further on dogu figurines, which some people think resemble ancient visitors to earth from outer space. Could be my bowl's decoration depicts a more recent alien encounter.

Best regards,

Bill H.
