Subject:Bronze turtle or tortoise
Posted By: Matt Sat, Apr 13, 2013 IP: 86.7.38.224

I have a small turtle/tortoise that was probably brought back from Asia in the 40s or 50s and just wanted to get some information on it. I hae searched for similar online and cannot really find anything concrete to go on - there seeem to be a huge range of this type of object. My early guesses would be Japanese and bronze (although I've no idea how to be sure it is bronze vs any other similarly-coloured metal type), beyond that...! It has a mark that I am unable to read and the finish quality is not expecially high or detailed so I suspect this may be a mass-produced factory product. Anyway, any light you may be able to shed on this would be much appreciated.

Hmmm, having looked the photos there does appear to be quite a lot of detail and finishing... maybe I was being harsh earlier! I think the light helps bring out the contours and detailing.

The Japanese name on the mark, is after Murata SEIMIN.

I think your piece is a reproduction. Online images have some good quality bronze pieces for comparison.

Keyword: Murata Seimin, 村田整珉
