Subject:Solid Black Vase Chinese or Japanese?
Posted By: Daniel Wed, Apr 17, 2013 IP: 23.16.218.139

Was just wondering if anyone recognizes this stamp/mark on the bottom of this vase? Ive searched for anything similar and it seems to look more Japanese than Chinese but I could find no comparable examples for this type of pottery (in either Japanese or Chinese pottery) except a few examples of very old pieces (this one has a very clean base so I assume its a modern creation). Thanks for your research!

How tall is this vase? It makes a difference. If it's small, it could be a liquor container.

That base character appears to be "顏" [yan], or color. Depending on where it was made, it could be read differently.

Keyword: "顏"

Thanks for the reply! Its 12" tall so its fairly large. The characters look very close so you may be right. Have you seen any comparable examples at this size before?
