Hi,
I'm really not sure what this is...perhaps some type of souvenir? There was a tag on the box that read Tribolite Fan. Any help is appreciated! Thanks.

Hi, did the tag say tribolite or trilobite? Is the inset part of the fan stone or shale? It may be meant to portray fossils, but I can't find a trilobite. The case is a common style for modern Asian reproductions. Regards, Jim

Yes, my mistake, it reads Trilobites China Fan. The material appears to be some type of soft stone.

What you have is similar to a Chinese scholar stone.
It is meant to be appreciated for its aesthetics.
In your case the pattern formed by the fossils
are similar to the balance of Chinese calligraphy.
Very dynamic piece.

You might want to spend more time researching the fan. China's Shandong Museum has one for comparison, but please remember there are a lot of fake fossil fans out there.

Your paper has an address & telephone. Perhaps if you can find a friend who can read them, to do some research online about the reputation of the company; is it a factory? a museum certified store and such? Good luck.
