Subject:Very odd vase
Posted By: Bob Wed, Apr 17, 2013 IP: 71.74.14.183

Hello,
I picked up this very odd vase at a local auction and am wondering what type and era it is? I haven't seen this type before.
Thank you,
Bob

That one character looks like "禮" [li].

Can you provide more photos of the unglazed body and base rim? Thanks.

Thank you very much for the response!
Do you know what the character means? Does it give any clue to age or era? I've attached a few more pictures. Does this type of vase have a named style?

Thank you again!
Bob

First impression is that this is a Japanese vase. But I will look further. Would appreciate if you can provide a close up photo of that symbol. Is that a cross or a dagger inside a shield-like pattern? Is that the only one on the body?

Thanks.
