Subject:Bronze bowl marking

I recently got a very heavy bronze bowl and was told it was Japanese but that's all the information I have. There is a mark on the bottom I'm hoping will help to identify the piece and its age. Any help would be great!

When flipped right 90 degrees, the two characters would read down as the Japanese surname Shimasa (嶋佐).

A quick Google search revealed nothing relevant to bronze, but maybe you'll have better luck.
