Subject:Help with mark on plate
Posted By: Andrew Wed, Apr 24, 2013 IP: 31.54.80.28

Dear Learned List Members

Can anyone recognise the mark on the bottom of the plate?

Is this item an example of Japanese export ware or other?

The surface decoration on the plate look like it has been hand pained on a pale greenish background with a gold lined edge

Many thanks
Andrew

This is a Chinese export dish in a Rose Canton pattern on celadon ground. The design on the base is a factory logo. While the criss-crossed diamond design at the center of the mark resembles an auspicious lozenge, and the angular forms that make up the surrounding fret look a bit like ancient musical stones, the mark itself isn't open to a meaningful translation.

The dish probably dates to the Daoguang period, circa 1840.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Thank you for your valued reply. I wrongly assumed that the plate was of Japanese design.

Regards
Andrew
