Subject:seal or signature identification artwork with gold
Posted By: Derek Fri, Apr 26, 2013 IP: 75.92.179.50

I'm looking for help identifying this seal/signature which is on a framed (silk?) I purchased. I know the art is at least as old as 1830, though I'm not sure how much older.
Is this a Japanese or Chinese artist?
Has anyone seen this seal before?
When might this have been painted?

Thank you so much for your help!

I'm taking a self taught crash course on chinese here so please let me know if I'm on the right track. Could the first stamp be Yun ? (in traditional Chinese)

The closest I've found to the second stamp is Ming.

Any ideas?
Any suggestions of where I can go to identify?

The top character is 香 Xiang - meaning 'fragrant' ; the second character is 月 Yue - meaning moon or month. (Code: UTF-8)

You need to understand that seal script is not a constant - it was originally a variety of writing systems used by different 'kingdoms' and/or language groups, now known as 'great' seal script. This was then codified 2000 odd years ago by the Chin Emperor (terracotta army tomb) into a single script for the new unified China. This was called 'small' seal script.

Seal carvers can and do draw on these wide and disparate streams, and add their own artistic interpretation. The only way to understand them takes years of study - and a bookshelf of dictionaries and seal impression volumes. Good luck!

Thank you for that explanation. My question then is does this seal help identify anything about the artwork? Thanks again

in this case not really. looks like mid-third quarter 20th century decorative work, not meant as fine art.
