Subject:Chinese Porcelain Stamp Help!!
Posted By: Joey Mon, Apr 29, 2013 IP: 24.44.44.121

Can anyone help in identifying the below pictured Chinese porcelain stamp. I was unable to find it in the book "Marks on Chinese Ceramics", I may have just pasted over it by mistake. Thank you in advance. Joe

I'm unsure if I've ever run across these same two characters together before on a vase like this. I'll leave the Japanese pronunciation to others, but 雨 is "rain", while 峯 is "mountain peak". The latter character has crossed my scope more than once in combination with other weather-related characters in the names of Japanese porcelain wares. So it may be that this is a Japanese piece, though the form also is common in Chinese wares. Now that I've probably confused the issue I'll retire.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Bill,
Thank you for your help. It is greatly appreciated.
P.S. You can't retire. The help you have provided to the many people on this forum and to myself is greatly needed and appreciated.

Joe

Chinese vase, possibly from the Republic era. You should be able to see some samples online with the keywords. Good luck.

Read as 雨岑, Yu Cen.

Keyword: "雨岑款"

I do believe I retired (went to sleep) at the wheel on this one. With Y.E.'s able assistance, I now recognize this as a mark of Liu Yucen (劉雨岑 - 1904-1969), one of the group called the "Eight Friends of Zhushan".

The link below leads to an auction result for a vase of somewhat similar form, with a better written mark of "Yucen" on the base and a sealed inscription on the side containing the "Liu Yucen" signature with which I am more familiar. If this vase is decorated entirely in the grisaille palette, it would be the first I've seen with a mark of Liu Yucen, not that I've seen them all. However, the mediocre price earned last year by the similarly marked vase at the link suggests to me that Chinese bidders weren't entirely convinced of its authenticity. Authentic signed porcelains by members of the "Eight Friends" usually sell well into the four figures if not higher.

Sorry 'bout the booboo,

Bill H.
