Subject:Modern? Small decorated chinese bowls
Posted By: Duncan Thu, May 02, 2013 IP: 81.246.102.252 Please could anyone tell me more about these two bowls. They are only about 2 inches across and seem to be hand decorated on a gold background to the inside of the bowl. |

Posted By: Matos Sat, May 04, 2013 Seems to be a japanese porcelain from the 20th century circa 1924 with mark "九谷" (Kutani). Mori Style? (photo is not clear). Hand decorated overglaze with gold and enamels. |

Posted By: john Sat, May 04, 2013 The mark (2 characters on the bottom of the bowl) is "Kutani". So these two are Japanese bowls, not Chinese. |

Posted By: Bill H Sun, May 05, 2013 These are Japanese bowls with Kutani marks, reflecting the geographic area where the kilns that made them are located. Bowls like them, with decoration of Japanese Lucky Gods, among other motifs, could be purchased in the late 20th century in sets of six at Japanese airport duty-free shops, other domestic giftware outlets and American military exchanges in Japan for nominal prices. In the USA, they can be found these days at estate sales and thrift shops, usually in lesser quantities and divorced from the original boxes. |
