Subject:Old Asian bowl ID
Posted By: CY Fri, May 03, 2013 IP: 65.38.17.252

Need help on identifying this old Asian bowl given to me by my late father.

He was a member of the Flying Tigers. I've got documentation proving he trained at the US Airforce base in Colorado Springs. along with various other documents.

All he told me was it was very old and to take care of it.

Well aware that appearances can fool the best... Would like to find out if this bowl is modern or old?

If colors of photo are correct seems to be an yellowish earthenware.
The word in the left side is not clear anyway the second word is definitely 山 (zan) so probably the porcelain came from Japan.
Cheers

The two characters, 晓山,is most likely the name of a Japanese kiln. And the pattern is more Japanese than Chinese. So I am almost positive that this is a Japanese bowl.

As for age, it is hard to tell without physical examination. Regardless of its age, your father is correct. This is a beautiful crackle bowl. Please take good care of it.

The character 晓 is a variant of 暁 (dawn), and when the latter is coupled as 暁山 forms the name Gyouzan or Gyozan, which turns up on eBay and other auction sites on antique and vintage Japanese pottery. Here's a relevant eBay URL that is too long to place in the link space below, so you'll have to paste it in your browser. Search the names in Google for other info.

Best regards,

Gyozan kiln from Kyoto I think with 'rimpa' style motif of a cherry blossom branch.
First half 20th century.
