Subject:Who painted this Chinese watercolor
Posted By: George E Mon, May 06, 2013 IP: 24.45.231.76

I recently bought this 22X12 inches watercolor painting. It has characters on it's lower right side. Any info is greatly appreciated.

George

the characters and seal read "sihua", likely a given name, in any case not a nickname I see a reference for right off the bat. If not a printed illustration (posting larger photos would be of help) this looks to be of pretty decent quality, probably Republican era, but I don't get why it is mounted as you have it, on what looks like card. possibly it's a modern imitation of Republic era Shanghai school painting, but hard to tell from your photos.

ugh, sometimes I make the stupidest mistakes. Bill has the name correct: Enhua, not Sihua. Will check again under Enhua in case I mistakenly looked under Sihua in my reference book.

The bold characters and seal both appear to read as "En Hua" (恩華). In modern usage, this could be a name, with "Hua" as the surname, of just a given name. Using Google, I found an artist Named Du Enhua (杜恩化), using a different character for "hua" but can't say whether there is a relationship.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Bill, I think Du Enhua (born 1970) is unrelated; this picture probably dates 50 years or so earlier than that.

Thank you Bill and rat for your comments. The painting is not mounted. Everything is original. Here are a few close up of the figures and some notes.
Kindest Regards,
George
