Subject:title page translation
Posted By: John R Tue, May 07, 2013 IP: 76.199.169.88

Attached are two pictures of an inscription
done as the title page to a handscroll signed
as a Zhang Daqian painting. Any help is appreciated.

Thought that I should post the painting and the
inscription from supposedly Zhang Daqian. The dimensions are 8" tall by 103.5" wide. At the
very least it is what I would term a competent copy.Once again thank you for any help. I realize that all Chinese paintings that were not witnessed and documented are considered forgeries unless proven otherwise.

your caution is appropriate, and Zhang and Pu among others were also known for contributing (genuine) colophons etc to faked works, which only makes the whole authentication process that much more challenging. Was just at the Asia Society on Sunday; there's a hanging scroll on view there from the Artful Recluse exhibition that includes (most likely genuine) colophons by both Zhang and Pu mounted above the picture itself. I think it was a Gong Xian landscape (from Honolulu?) or perhaps a Chen Hongshou floral subject, will have to check the catalog.

as for your picture, the inscription signed as by Zhang is not in his hand. The painting has a decent Zhang color scheme but is pretty far from his style. Whoever did it probably also did Shitao fakes as well though.
