Subject:Blue and White Brush Pot with Qianlong Mark--Age?
Posted By: Jennifer Thu, May 09, 2013 IP: 98.240.80.74

Hi,
I know this brush pot has a qianlong mark, but how old is it, really? It seems to be a good quality porcelain, and the painting looks to be nicer than average.
Thanks!

I was hoping to get an expert's thoughts on this...anyone, please?

Hi Jennifer,
Your brush pot dates to the Republic period, circa 1915 to 1930. These nicely potted and painted pieces can be found with either Kangxi, Yongzheng or Qianlong reign marks.

As in your example, the dragon scales are painted with a cross-hatch and dot; a method of painting to my knowledge not used before late in the Daoguang reign, circa 1850, which with the coarse foot rim, rules out any possibility of a Qianlong period dating.

Regards
Tony

Tony,
Thank you very much for all that great information. I really appreciate it more than you know! So glad I found this board...you all are a wealth of knowledge. I find Asian porcelains so fascinating, but I am very, very new to all this.

My impression is that this piece is transfer-printed. Anyone else think so? I'm looking at the hairs behind the dragon's neck in particular.

If so, it might indicate a more modern dating.
