Subject:Help with Chinese Kendi
Posted By: Julia Thu, May 09, 2013 IP: 118.172.26.210

I Want to start my collection of Chinese porcelain, and was thinking to purchase this one as for the start, However I do not know much about how to make the difference if its real or fake, can someone tell me what they think about this 16th Century Kendi from Ming dyansty?

You really should take to heart the advice rendered earlier (link) by one of the most astute participants in these forums. I'm less subtle by nature than he is so can say without qualms, having lived and worked in and around Thailand for years, I would not touch that kendi with a ten foot pole, lest it set the pole on fire from the heat of its quite recent sojourn in the kiln.

This is all I or anyone else needs to say about the subject until you show signs of having done some serious research on your own.

Best regards,

Bill H.

I concur with Bill. If you are starting to collect Chinese ceramics I would recommend you avoid (or at the least, buy with experienced advice) those offered by sellers in China and South East Asia.
Note the sheen on the exterior of this khendi has been dulled, probably with either acid or sand blasting. The potter however didn't treat the underside the same. A dead giveaway of fakery.

Good luck in your quest.
Regards
Tony
