Curious if this is more than just a higher end factory piece.. the detailing is very nice.

The vase may be Japanese "Tokoname" ware, which is a carved terra cotta with burnished ground, similar to some Chinese Yixing wares. However, the dragons on this piece look more typical of the Chinese style. Bottom line, additional opinions would be worthwhile.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Bill,

I wonder if this piece is rather Chinese.
Normally, a Japanese dragon is represented with only three claws/toes.

The mark reads probably 金龍魚吉. I don't know the spelling in Chinese but the literal translation of the first two characters is 'Golden Dragon'; the two other characters 'Fish of Good Fortune'.
In Japanese this should be spelled as 'KinryĆ» Gyokichi' but I still think that the vase with the motive of confronting dragons, is Chinese.
