Having a little difficulty categorizing this piece. Do you this is Chinese or Japanese? Thank you in advance for any comments.

Lip Diameter: 2-3/4"
Height: 1"

This is a Chinese condiment dish in the "mille fleurs" (萬花彩 - wan hua cai) pattern. The motif was very much in vogue during the late Qing through early Republic period.

I've attached an image of a dinner plate in the pattern with most of the base markings found from the period.

Best regards,

Bill H.

This small condiment dish came from a sake cup collection. I imagined the previous owner must have enjoyed the floral decorations while drinking his rice wine...

Using it as a condiment dish, (with soy sauce and such), one would probably overlook the colorful decorations... Nevertheless, I'm going to categorized this piece as such.

Many thanks for your help Bill H.!

Side note.

Bill H.: I noticed the old paper label on your photo. I happen to have a small vase with similar label. Never figured out what the missing letters on the second line were, until now...
