Subject:Chinese Porcelain Plaque Artist & Translation Help?
Posted By: John Sun, May 12, 2013 IP: 24.44.44.121

Can anyone help me with identifying who the artist is of the Chinese porcelain plaques I purchased? I also need help with translation and does it state a year it was written? I purchased them at a VERY reasonable price of $50.00. Thank you in advance. John

Rat,
Thank you for your opinion. May I ask what makes you think it is an imitation? Is there something you see that makes it look fake. I appreciate your time and help.
John

Liu Yucen (1904-69), was one of the members of the artistic circle known as the "Eight Friends of Zhushan", thus was acclaimed in his time. The artwork on the plaques seen here is bush-league compared to what Liu did in his prime, which station he certainly enjoyed during the ding mao year (1927), which is the cyclical calendar date in the inscriptions.

Please check the thread at the link below, for earlier comment and another link to four somewhat later examples of Liu's plaques, which works were auctioned at Sotheby's and show his excellent brushwork and brilliant pigment in zoomable format. Plaques with ersatz signatures such as the four here, wherein lackluster painting talent is punctuated by dull enamel colors, have been popping up with increasing frequency on the market recently.

Best regards,

Bill H.
