Subject:Japanese modern painting seal help
Posted By: Willie Mon, May 13, 2013 IP: 71.10.225.48

I am trying to identify the artist of this piece. I am hoping someone here will recognize or could try to read the seal. The closest I got to the seal with matching style was Uemura Shoen. Wish that were true but if nothing else comes up maybe a knock-off? Any help would be appreciated.

from what I can see when I look Uemura up, your picture is not by her, but should be by someone active in the same time frame (Taisho/early Showa). I can't read the character on the right side of the seal, hopefully a Japan expert will save the day.

Could be the character 巧 (kô) at the right. How do you read the one at the left?

Rat,
Thanks for looking. Guy's most recent post tells us that this is a copy (fragment) of a Shoen Uemora work. Because there is no signature I'll continue to look for another instance of this seal but I suppose it may be simply made up. You said you couldn't read the right side. Do you have any thought on the rest? Guy has suggested that the right might read 巧 (Ko).

It is Shoen Uemura. Seems to be a repro depicting a fragment of the original painting that is in the Osaka City Museum of Fine Arts, painted in 1943.

Guy,
Thank you so much for tracking this down. I don't know how you find these things. Have you come across many of these reproduction pieces. I am wondering where they fit in the range of respectful copy to stealing. As I just wrote to Rat, I will continue to look for the seal/artist but it may be a waste of time.

Willie,

Found it by googling Shoen Uemura's name in Japanese. I was pretty sure it was her.
