Posted By: Julie Mon, May 13, 2013 IP: 76.20.215.169

I bough this bronze or maybe it is brass I can't tell ) dragon square mouth vase? at a flea market for 5 bucks , I do not know what the markings read and also there are two marks under the base inside a round nickle size circle.. The red that you see is the red felt material that was underneath the base , I just pulled it back to see if there were any other markings and there were .....Thank you

Dear Julie
The archaic script (ancient chinese characters) means: 大明宣德年造 - Tà Míng Xuāndé Nián Zào - made in Ming Dinasty Xuande years, even though style used is too minimalist, I mean too much "fashion" design to be really old, consequently not so usual, thus, I have some doubt about the last character "造".
Anyway, all others 5 characters are totally correct.
Is it a box for a bottle of chinese wiskey ?
Cheers

It's a heavy box , I was told I should get the metal tested - and as far as the whiskey . it could've been used for it Cheers (_)?

looks like an attractive Japanese vase with an apocryphal Chinese mark on the neck claiming it dates from the Ming Xuande reign period, which was famous for its bronzes, such that the Xuande period has been slapped every piece of junk ever made since then. not sure what the base reads but is a better clue as to its maker, possibly Nakahito? but that's just a guess.
