Subject:Another Japanese Print Help?

Here is another Japanese print I have. Can anyone help with identifying the print, artist and or inscription. Thank you in advance. Joe

There is not a lot to use for identification. It also looks to be a bijin print but by Toyokuni I. I'll take a closer look later.

Cheers,
Stan

The artist is Utagawa Toyokuni I (1769-1825). At the base is the publisher's mark of Omaya Hangorô.
Under the signature ('Toyokuni ga') are two circular censor seals: 1- a 'gyôji' seal by Tsukurin Kinsuke and 2- a standard 'kiwame' seal.
The presence of the 'gyôji' seal indicates a publishing date between 1811 and 1813. Note also that the signature, seals and publisher's mark. are carved into the woodblock.
The depicted girl is a high ranking courtesan ('oiran') of the Yoshiwara pleasure quarters in Edo (now Tokyo).

Guy.

Guy,

Great information! I didn't know what that symbol was. It helps date my Toyokuni I Kabuki diptych (Bando Mitsugoro III & Ichikawa Danjuro VII) closer than circa 1810. Thanks!

Cheers,
Stan

The standard reference work now is 'Publishers of Japanese Woodblock Prints: A Compendium' compiled by Andreas Marks, Hotei Publishing, 2011.

You will find 100s of publishers seal and censor's seals in it and much more.

Best regards,
Guy

Guy,

I noted that book when it came out and put it on my list of must-haves. Regrettably, my finances have been less than flush since then and I spent my last hobby money on a lot of 30+ prints last fall. When I hemmed and hawed about the price, the seller threw in 30+ kacho-e prints. It was a great deal but did cause financial pain.

Cheers,
Stan
