Subject:How old?
Posted By: Jim Sat, May 18, 2013 IP: 108.0.22.77

While this plate is hand painted and clams to be Chenghua/Ming, the porcelain looks to new and the signature looks to sloppy. Also I don’t think they had plates with fluted edges back then? How old should I assume this plate is? Than-x

This is Japanese 19th century Meiji-period Imari-palette export ware. See the link for auction results on a group of plates in the same pattern.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Hi Jim.

How old??? .....I think about 125 years old.
Because of the mark you're probably thinking this is Chinese but it isn't... it is Japanese. This also explains the, what you called, sloppy writing. Such pieces are called "Daishoji or Daisyoji ware ". It's a kind of rivival of earlier Edo Imari ware (a bit comparable with Chinese Kangxi revival) during the Meiji period. The color of the blue is an easy indication to date it as a "later" piece.

Regards,

Arjan

Thank you Arjan for taking time to respond--seems the more I try the less I seem to know--rally thought it was a Chinese signature-Than-x for the help and the web sight Regards Jim
