Hello, Can anyone identify the artist of this large 20 1/4" x 69" paper on silk mountain scene wall scroll? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated! Thank you! David.

I believe the scroll probably is Chinese. What's shown of its bold inscription in cursive script seems to read down as 泉玉 (Quan Yu), literally "fountain of jade" but perhaps best taken in a more literary context as "wealth of jade". The red mark looks to contain the same two characters in seal script, reading from left to right in Western style, which suggests a 20th century or later date for the painting. There's always a chance the complete inscription may reveal a cyclical date and even the painter's surname. Sometimes in art less is more, but other times less is simply not enough.

Best regards,

Bill H.

well said!

I think the inscription differs from the seal though, the last character of the inscription being a somewhat simplified version of 畫 (painted by). The artist still could be using the name 玉泉 though. Seems a decent contemporary picture in traditional style
