Subject:Blue Imari Charger with mark: any info?
Posted By: WardL Mon, Apr 17, 2017 IP: 112.71.207.132

Hello,

I bought this blue imari charger (~41 cm / 16 inch), I really liked the detailed linework on it. There is a mark on the bottom as well as spur markings. I was wondering if anyone had information on the origin, date and style?

Thanks!

Because of the spur marks this must be a Japanese charger late Edo periode, 19th century with a copied Chinese Reign mark, not unusual on Japanese chargers from that period. Arita ware.
Mark in Japanese Kanji: 大明 成化 年製 = Daimei Seika Nen Sei.
In Chinese it would be: Dai Ming Chenghua Nian Zhi
= Great Ming Chenghua Period Made.

Regards,
Martin.

It looks like an apocryphal Ming Dynasty mark. This charger appears to be Japanese. The base has stippling from the kiln. I would say perhaps Meiji Period, late 19th Century.
