Subject:Help with Hanging Scroll
Posted By: Jim N Fri, Apr 28, 2017 IP: 2602:0306:bd69:7650:

Hi,

I'd appreciate any information you can provide about this painting. Country of origin, artist, date...? The last picture is the writing on the end of the box, which for some reason, keeps turning sideways.

Thanks,

Jim

Decent Japanese painting, purportedly "Chrysanthemums" by Tomioka Tessai, but not in his style. I have little expertise with Japanese paintings though, perhaps someone else can chime in.

Hi Rat,

That makes some sense. I rechecked my father's notes and he originally thought he had two Tessai's, although he subsequently gave some paintings away as gifts. If he still had the other Tessai, it would have been of a Lotus flower, so it would be one of the two paintings that I've attached. I can't see any similarities in the signatures or seals on any of them. My guess is that if its either of them, its the first one (the tall one).

From what I read about Tessai, his style of painting changed over the years. The paintings that he is best know for were painted in the last two decades of his life. If any of these are actually Tessai's, they are probably earlier works.

Thanks,

Jim
