Subject:silver bird on patinated bronze tree stump
Posted By: Alison Day Mon, May 01, 2017 IP: 82.14.214.171

I inherited this from my grandfather; I believe his brother brought it back from the Far East in the first half of the 20th century. I enclose a photograph of the maker's mark, and the front and rear view of the sculpture. I would appreciate any information about it. Thank you.

It seems the scan of the maker's mark did not upload, so I am adding this to my earlier message.

This is a Japanese, Meiji era okimono of excellent quality, primarely made for the export to the West (Europe and the USA).
I read the maker's mark as 'Seiji saku' (清司作 - 'made by Seiji').
I presume that the craftsman was Oshimoto Seiji (押本清司). Date ca. early 1900s.

Guy.

Thank you, Guy, for that information, it has helped solve a mystery.
