Subject:Zitan Stands
Posted By: Lysander Sat, May 13, 2017 IP: 2601:0900:4380:0ec0:

I'm looking for information on these carved charger or upright bowl stands, which I believe are zitan.
One is 16 ½ inches tall by 10½ inches wide and the other is 15½ by 11½. The depths are 5½ and 5 inches respectively.
Intricately carved. Are these fine pieces are mass produced and to what period might they be attributed?

You would need to post a clear photo showing the grain of the wood for any reasonable assessment of wood type for your charger stands.

That said, the style of the carving seems modern, or perhaps Japanese influenced.

I don't think the stands are old, but if the wood is indeed zitan, that does not mean the stands are without value.

It seems to me the design is Japanese influenced from the Chinese design. The wood most likely not zitan which is heavy lacquered to cover the wood grain but definitely coming from the rosewood family.
