Subject:IS THIS VASE CHINESE OR JAPANESE, APPROXIMATE AGE?
Posted By: Ara Sat, Jun 24, 2017 IP: 2605:e000:908b:3000:

So I've posted a few things on this site before (mostly related to kanji character translation), received a large number of view, but no replies! I figured I'd give it another try and see if anyone out there can help me with this vase. It appears to be a Far Eastern origin and looks like it has good age, but there aren't any markings on it whatsoever. It's a rather heavy pottery piece with a crackled, caramel yellow glaze. Can anyone out there pinpoint its origin (Chinese, Japanese?) and approximate age based on the vase's form and firing method? Any thanks would be appreciated!

Ara,

You probably have noticed that there are only a few people answering the posted questions. Most of them each with their own expertise. But in some cases we just don't know or it's too hard to judge from the posted information and/or photo's.

I've looked back at some of your earlier posted questions the last weeks about marks and in all cases I was not able to decipher the characters. Probably the more experienced Japanese or Chinese language experts had the same problem, so no-one answered.

And I'm sorry, I can't help you with this vase either, it's not my expertise, but keep on trying.

Regards,
Martin.

Thank you so much for the message Martin, and for taking the time to have a look at some of my posts. After posting a few items and not receiving any responses, I began to sense that this forum was more of a 'club' where outsiders were ignored, so much thanks for clearing up that fallacy. Actually, it seems this time I got lucky because another individual attributed the vase as Thai Sawankhalok, c 1500! Neat! Thanks again!

Possibly Sawankhalok ware from Thailand, made around 1500.
