Subject:Qianlong Saucer dish ID
Posted By: Sandra Fri, Jun 30, 2017 IP: 31.48.122.173

Hello

Is it possible you could please confirm this is an 18th century Qianlong saucer as I have sent this to someone in China and they say the saucer is possibly "Modern Arts & Crafts". Any further information about this item is appreciated.

Many thanks

The saucer with underglaze blue riverine landscape appears to be authentically of the Qianlong period, although such gilt motifs often were added after the dishes were exported for sale in the English market.

Best regards,

Bill H.

What makes you say it is a modern piece?

Dear Sandra

To me this looks real. Would it be possible to provide a closer look at the footrim and the "circle" of glaze contained in the footrim?

The rear perhaps looks a little perfect from this distance but a closer look should reveal whether it has genuine imperfections and/or an artificially dirtied footrim.

At first it appears to be an 18th century export plate with European or British over- gilt. The more I look at it, the more I favor a modern reproduction. The lack of wear and the uniform blue brush work both lead to that opinion.
