Subject:Qianlong Saucer dish ID
Posted By: Sandra Fri, Jun 30, 2017 IP: 31.48.122.173

Hello

Is it possible you could please confirm this is an 18th century Qianlong saucer as I have sent this to someone in China and they say the saucer is possibly "Modern Arts & Crafts". Any further information about this item is appreciated.

Many thanks

The saucer with underglaze blue riverine landscape appears to be authentically of the Qianlong period, although such gilt motifs often were added after the dishes were exported for sale in the English market.

Best regards,

Bill H.

What makes you say it is a modern piece?

Dear Sandra

To me this looks real. Would it be possible to provide a closer look at the footrim and the "circle" of glaze contained in the footrim?

The rear perhaps looks a little perfect from this distance but a closer look should reveal whether it has genuine imperfections and/or an artificially dirtied footrim.

At first it appears to be an 18th century export plate with European or British over- gilt. The more I look at it, the more I favor a modern reproduction. The lack of wear and the uniform blue brush work both lead to that opinion.

I don't see anything wrong with the brushwork from the perspective of the Qianlong era. I suppose the two figures on the bridge make this the "Nanking Pattern"? (Compare Allen's "Detection Of Fakes" fig 14.1.19a).

I agree there is not much visible wear on this object, but I still think it's Qianlong.

Kind regards

I recently saw two small plates with almost the exact decoration in a local antique show. Both had almost pristine surfaces and the same gilding that did not correspond to the underglaze blue pattern in any sensible way. The seller would not allow me to photograph the plates because they were on hold and therefore "belonged" to the potential buyer. On close examination they were not period porcelain, but could have been made yesterday. In all my years, I have never seen porcelain purported to be 18th century with virtually no surface marring however minor. Again, the wares I got to hold and examine closely were not the one pictured as the subject plate, so I could be way off base here. There, I do feel better getting my 2 cents in.
