Subject:Please help to identify this painting
Posted By: Paul Minh Mon, Jul 03, 2017 IP: 172.249.149.48

I have this very beautiful watercolor painting.
Based on the attached Felice Beato photo in the J. Paul Getty Museum, I would guess that the painting was done in Japan by a Western artist around 1970-1980.
The signature reads like of John La Farge, but I have seen his signature like that.
I would appreciate any help on this.
Thank you.
Paul

I mean 1870-1880 and "I have not seen his signature like that"

What you have is an Irrawaddy delta scene by a fairly well known and prolific local Burmese artist, Lar Ban, a.k.a. "Muang" (an honorific, 'younger brother' I think) Lar Ban. He was painting from around the 1930's through at least the early 1980's, when I was there with the American Embassy.

Here's one of his watercolors that brighten my walls. I noticed information at the links below as well as some hits on pinterest and other web locations. I'd suggest you continue the search.

This message is for Bill H

I have quite a number of paintings by Lar Ban here in UK but back in Burma I talked to a number of people in the art community in Rangoon in the past few years and no one knew of him. Might you be able to share more information about him? Did you buy his painting from the artist directly or from a shop? I wonder whether Lar Ban (a Mon word) is a pseudonym. I lived in Burma till 1975. Best regards, Soe
