Subject:Help needed for Mark on plate
Posted By: John Thu, Jul 06, 2017 IP: 188.29.164.25

Hello Guys I have brought this plate at a car boot sale and I haven't been able to find anything on the mark. I think it could be Japanese I am not sure. I heard if the dragon has 3 claws it is Japanese? So I'm not sure can someone please ID the mark for me. It would be much appreciated.

The mark, shown upside-down on a slant, reads from the top right down when flipped as "肥前 (Hizen, a former Province now called Saga) 有田 (Arita, the historic porcelain-making center) and (城岩, Shiroiwa, a surname and porcelain brand name)"

The link below, to a Chinese discussion forum, has comments on another Shiroiwa brand dish, which is not very old. A translation of the evaluation follows:

"Expert opinion (because of the peculiarity of the collection and the limitations of the photos, the identification results are for reference only!)

Assessor Number: 2436

Appraisal Time: 2016/12/15 07:37:20

Age: 50-60 years

Collectible Value: Value is not high

Opinion reference: This large blue and white and purple chicken motif Bowl by a Japanese producer has a certain old-fashioned air, it dates to the 1950-1960 era of the last century. The mouth has damage, diminishing price."

I found some museum information at another website, pasted below, which shows Shiroiwa dishes are displayed amongst modern wares.
