Subject:Chinese Cloisonne Vase
Posted By: kevin Donnelley Thu, Jul 06, 2017 IP: 69.120.62.142

Dear Members,
I am hoping one of the experts might be able to date this piece for me.
I have only found the 4 petal flower decorations on early to middle Qing cloisonne pieces. In Chinese, the number 4 is a homonym for the word death, and any reference to the number may have thereafter been deemed to have been inappropriate with the decoration done away with
The base, a bronze color shows tool marks around the inner edge of the foot rim, and file marks under a loupe.
H: 15.6 cm

Thank you for looking

Kind Regards

This vase shape and overall composition shows up fairly frequently in pieces that seem to date to around 1915, give or take ten years either way. The 4-petaled begonia? flower appears along with other flowers and scrolls in the bands around the banana leaf section.

I have difficulty thinking these little bottles and vases go back to the 1890s, as the pieces that seem to be from late Qing are more intricate and detailed, featuring somewhat different dragons and vase shapes than yours.

Attached are examples of a yellow bottle with a LaoTianLi signature on the base;

More elaborate LaoTianLi-signed dragon bottle with the jewel and tassel frieze and a variety of flowers in the neck and foot bands;

Jar with a more naturalistic depiction of what seems to be a begonia plant on the lid. It's a dragon & phoenix jar, converted into an electric lamp with what looks like a fitting from the 1910s-20s.

I think this could be early or mid-20th Century. Here are 2 similar early 20th Century dragon vases I owned. They are marked CHINA on the bottom.

Rather than being hand tooled the base appears to be machine spun from a uniform blank, which would put the vase well into the 20th century.

Very fine and precise workmanship, the gilding is still bright. Height is about 6.5 inches.

I know it dates to before 1949, as it was brought out of Shanghai then by a women fleeing the Chinese Communist Party, who is now deceased, alas.
