Subject:Folding book of woodblock prints (Ori Ehon Ukiyo-E?)
Posted By: Viva Tue, Jul 18, 2017 IP: 69.181.122.193

I recently got this piece - it has 80 beautiful woodblock prints. Amazing imagery (singles, diptychs, triptychs) in wonderfully rich colors, gradients, pastels... some silvery metallic ink here and there for snow falling, graying hair, etc. Great registration. It has no writing on the front or back pieces. I can't possibly guess at it's age, but there are some prints with people wearing Western-style attire. Any leads on what to look for to help with dating?

Looks like mostly Meiji and a bit later prints, though some may be reproductions. Those you showed closeups of include plenty of identifiable information, but no one here is going to go through all 80 for you without being paid for their time and expertise. You can learn the characters for the various reign periods and numbers for dating on your own easily enough, and the website above gives information about artists (not sure about publishers)

Thanks for the link and the names. Just the sort of direction is was looking for... much appreciated. I absolutely didn't expect an image by image review.

You have a very nice conglomeration of Meiji (late 1800s) Japanese woodblock prints by various artists. The triptych looks like it is by Chikashige and the single looks like it is by Yoshitoshi (though it is hard to see the signatures in your pix).

Cheers,
Stan

I stand corrected. The single is by Nakazawa Toshiaki. See link below.

I guess I was right. I could see the signatures. I stand corrected again. The triptych is by Chikanobu. See link below:

I find this site to be quite helpful. You can upload a photo and get identification.
