Subject:Large Shadow Boxes of Great Wall Hong Kong Harbor Stork
Posted By: Dale Tue, Jul 18, 2017 IP: 198.166.248.109

I bought some large Chinese shadow boxes that I would like to get some more information on. They were from a restaurant in Hong Kong in the 70s I was told. I don't read Chinese so a translation would be nice. There is writing on the glass and on the picture and also a stamp as well. A value estimation would be appreciated as well Thanks
Hong Kong harbor 43 1/2" x 23 1/2"
Great Wall of China 35 1/2" x 23 1/2"
Stork 27 1/2" x 15 1/2"

These were not manufactured to be fine art.

Value is how much you like them for decoration.

Thank you. I was thinking the value would be in the collectibles market if these were unique as shadow boxes. So you are suggesting they are not that rare and not that collectible and not that valuable? An estimated value anyone?

the inscriptions in red indicate that these were presented to the "Drunken Red(-faced) Chaozhou Restaurant", likely when it was opened, by various well-wishers, including one other restaurant, a couple, and various individuals.

Not Hong Kong harbor, just a scene of "rivers and mountains" resembling Guilin/Yangshuo

Thanks for your reply. I have another picture of an eagle that the glass got broken. So I can replace the glass and not really be losing value for that picture without the writing.

Thanks Rat for the information and translation. I checked out the Guilin/Yangshuo and see the similarities in the picture. Looks very scenic and a nice place to visit as I imagine a lot of tourist would go there. The picture looked like a harbor and Hong Kong harbor came to my mind but I think you are definitely right that it is a picture based on the Guilin/Yangshuo area.
