Subject:Help identifying origins of sculptures.
Posted By: Asian Lions Wed, Jul 19, 2017 IP: 40.138.22.249

Greetings,

I work at a spa in Providence, RI. We have a pair of these Asian lion statues in the reception area, and my director was curious as to their origin and possible value. I was wondering if anyone could help me identify where they might be from. They both are fairly heavy, but not so heavy that I'd think they're solid stone.

Thank you in advance for taking the time to look at this and for any help you may provide.

Looks like a temple lion from Laos. The link is to a photo of one sourced to a temple in Vientiane. A lot of temple art like this, antique and newer decorative imitations, came out of Laos in the household goods of diplomats and others who worked there circa the 1960's-1970's. In my opinion, it would take hands-on examination by an expert to get an estimate of how old those at your spa might be. You sure they aren't bronze with a stucco veneer to accommodate the mirrored pieces?

Best regards,

Bill H.

I suggest you start your serious research with Thai Temple Lions.
