Subject:Question for Rat and Bill
Posted By: Gary Wed, Jul 19, 2017 IP: 2600:1009:b06e:61d9:

On June 29 I posted four Chinese scrolls and both of you guys responded to my post. Another person has informed me that the scrolls might be Japanese. Is there anyway you gentlemen can take another look at this previous post and tell me your thoughts?

Only if the gentleman with whom you conferred can elaborate on why he thinks they are Japanese while showing some examples.

Hi Gary,

I don't see these as being Japanese, though I don't have the expertise in Japanese art needed to rule the possibility out. What you need are reliable examples of stylistically similar paintings, or banners with similar format, wherever they may be from.

The inscription in your last photo in the earlier thread reads 四佛三陀 and relates to Buddhism but I'm not sure precisely how. Literally the characters seem to read "4 Buddhas, 3 Amitabha Buddhas", although I'm only inferring the latter, because 陀 is part of 阿彌陀佛, the name for the Amitabha Buddha of the Pure Land sect.

The final character/mark may read 品, meaning "product/item"
