Subject:Identifying artist of print and worth if any
Posted By: Stephanie Wed, Jul 26, 2017 IP: 210.142.96.239

Hi there.
I recently acquired this print from a shrine market in Kyoto. I was wondering if you could verify who made it and what/ if anything it might be worth.

The information I know (or have been told) is that it is dated before 1830 based on the format being larger.
the actors depicted are:
Nakamura Utaemon (probably III)
Nakamura Skoko
Both from Osaka

I was told that theartist was an apprentice of Hokusai.
Am I wrong in thinking this could be Shunkosai Hokushu ga?

I dont think this is Shunkosai Hokushu whose signature is like this one: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shunk%C5%8Dsai_Hokush%C5%AB#/media/File:Signatures_of_Shunk%C3%B4sai_Hokush%C3%BB_from_left_to_right-_Shunk%C3%B4_and_Shunk%C3%B4sai_Hokush%C3%BB.jpg

This is signed as Shunshosai Hokuchō (春曙斎北頂), a student of Shunkosai.

It appears that depicts Nakamura Utaemon (中村歌右衛門) and Nakamura Karoku (中村歌六).

I have no idea at all if its authentic or its worth. Check this similar work from him: http://woodblockprints.org/index.php/Detail/Object/Show/object_id/156

The signature of the artist clearly reads:
春曙斎北頂 Shunshosai Hokucho
Actually he was a disciple of Shunkosai Hokushu
With regards,

The artist is Shunshosai Hokuchô (春曙斎北頂, fl. c. 1822-1830).
This diptych (two ôban format sheets) was published by Honya Seishichi in Osaka and depicts the actors (right) Nakamura Utaemon III (中村歌右衛門 - 1778-1838) and (left) Nakamura Matsue III (中村松江 - 1786-1855) on stage during a kabuki performance in Osaka, late 1820s.

There is no connection with Hokusai.
Cfr. Hokuchô's biographical Wiki page below.

Guy.

I make the signature (shunshosai Hokucho ga) to be Hokucho Inoue (active 1822-30). I make the left actor as Nakamura Matsue III (中村松江). Working on the other actor.

Cheers,
Stan
