Subject:Identifying artist of print and worth if any
Posted By: Stephanie Wed, Jul 26, 2017 IP: 210.142.96.239

Hi there.
I recently acquired this print from a shrine market in Kyoto. I was wondering if you could verify who made it and what/ if anything it might be worth.

The information I know (or have been told) is that it is dated before 1830 based on the format being larger.
the actors depicted are:
Nakamura Utaemon (probably III)
Nakamura Skoko
Both from Osaka

I was told that theartist was an apprentice of Hokusai.
Am I wrong in thinking this could be Shunkosai Hokushu ga?

The signature reads "Shunshosai Hokucho ga". Hokucho was a pupil of Hokushu. An Osaka artist, your print's well-preserved colors are likely due to being mounted in an album - a common practice for print collectors in Osaka.

I won't really venture a guess as to worth, but since the arrival of eBay, prints (and numerous other collectibles) have suffered a rather remarkable loss of value. I'd just say that the value is rather modest compared to what they were a few years ago.
