Subject:Chinese Painting Help
Posted By: Brett Sun, Aug 20, 2017 IP: 69.117.76.255

I purchased this today. It is a watercolor painting of a woman surrounded by animals. Is this anyone from folklore that worked with / tended to animals? Also any idea what the inscription and chops says, and the artist's name? Thanks for any help I always appreciate it.

The inscription on the scroll reads,
五山神女 Wushan Goddess
(Wushan, literally "Five Mountains" is the centre of Chan Buddhism in China).
甲子年正月 Year of Wood-Rat (..1924,1984..)
New Year
銭光新 Qian Guangxin (Signature)
Lower Seal,
銭光新私 Qian Guangxin Private (Seal)
Upper Seal,
向xx
        (Hard to read big-seal scrip)
Could be the art name of artist.
Qian Guangxin born in 1962. Recently his works are in request on auctions.
With regards,

No, this is unrelated to Chan Buddhism. Rather its title is 玉山神女, and depicts Xiwangmu ("queen mother of the west") as the divine woman 神女 of title. Xiwangmu lived on 玉山 Jade Mountain.

See: https://books.google.com/books?id=8zHxlL8my-YC&pg=PA125&lpg=PA125&dq=jade+mountain+goddess&source=bl&ots=ZWyF-OACTa&sig=tg245SS7478Ymw52XUUZlnk9dgA&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjr9PqB4OvVAhUFwiYKHTDKCkIQ6AEITzAI#v=onepage&q=jade%20mountain%20goddess&f=false

Similar image with the same title is here (Scroll down): http://blog.xuite.net/chi120819276/twblog/153633413-%E6%96%B0%E5%9F%94%E5%BB%A3%E5%92%8C%E5%AE%AE%E7%9A%84%E5%BB%9F%E5%AE%87%E5%BD%A9%E7%B9%AA

Thanks for the help to both of you. I saw a that page that says his works are being requested by auction houses, but I see no prices on any of the pages that show examples of his work. Are his works going cheaply on these auction sites / houses or is there any monetary value. I'm not sure if you see any of this information on any Chinese auction sites, but if you come across any information I would appreciate it. Thanks for the work you have done, I really appreciate it.

Dear Brett,
I spent more than an hour to look after the painter again on Chinese web sites.
What I have found out
is that there is some confusion with the
names, 銭光新 and 銭広新,( both reads Qian Guang Xin) on the sites.Seemingly, even the
Chinese editors got confused with the names.
You will find maybe the other Qian Guang Xin, if you type "Qian Guang Xin painter" into your
Google browser. I tried to enlarge enough the
pictures to compare the signatures, but the
quality did not permit it. However,I would guess he is in
request.
With regards,
