Subject:Re: Hand painted Chinese vase with bats, with guangxu mark

This is a somewhat recent knock-off, I believe. The mark looks suspicious on several counts, such as the guang character, which looks like it has been given a crew-cut on top. The degree of departure from the traditional figural painting style of the reign period is significant as well. Also, female children were seldom so obvious on Chinese export porcelain until after the Qing Dynasty fell, a prejudice Republic porcelain-makers continued to observe for years to come. Thus, the presence in the motif apparently of a young girl in attire more suited to boys seems to peg this vase to the mid-20th century or later.
Tony Allen speaks better to these matters than I ever will, but it is my sense of the market that underglaze blue Guangxu marks have been increasing on fakes from China in the last few years.
Best regards,
Bill H.
