Posted By: Sam Sun, Sep 03, 2017 IP: 69.54.6.250

I have several blue and white porcelains that have character marks that I cannot read. I would love some help deciphering for dating purposes. Much Thanks!

Hi Sam,
I can only help you with the 6 character mark on the 2nd picture.
It's saying: Hogyoku-en 宝玉園 (Jewel Garden) Senpachi 仙八 Sei 製 (Made by Senpachi), Google translator.

This mark is also in the book of Lord James Bowes: Japanese marks and seals (1882) where he translates it as: Ho-gioku-yen Sen-pachi seisu.
See this link: http://db.nichibun.ac.jp/en/d/GAI/info/GL008/item/421/?p=71
Which also means, that this mark is from before 1882 !

Regards,
Martin.

Thanks for the reply Martin!
Here is the bigger picture of that plate with the six marks. Interesting.....I always assumed it was Chinese. Does the decoration provide any other clues of era? It's a shame it is cracked, but damage was done long ago.

Sincerely,
Sam

Sam,

I can't say much about the plate. You thought probably it's Chinese because of the phoenix. But a lot of the blue-and-white Japanese porcelain in those days (18th + 19th C.) was copied from Chinese examples, often even with faux Chinese reign marks.
Regards,
Martin.
