Subject:Saishuntei vase - what does it say?
Posted By: Jannik Mon, Sep 04, 2017 IP: 87.73.40.69

I believe the vase below to be marked somewhat identical to the vase linked to.
My question is regarding the first image. As seen there are 3 characters - does anyone know what it might say?

I forgot to ask - would this be early or relatively late Meiji 1890-> ?

the 3 characters are:
- Migi 右 (right, so probably the right one of a pair of vases).
- Roku 六 (6)
- Shichi 七 (7)
No idea what these numbers mean, perhaps someone else knows.
Regards,
Martin.

Martin,

The numbers and directions indicate this vase was part of a mirrored pair at one time. The number is the pattern so that the decorator knew what to paint. This type of pattern work was done mostly in the late 19th through mid 20th centuries.
