Subject:Kangxi Famille Verte Vase Sold on eBay
Posted By: Bokaba Sat, Sep 09, 2017 IP: 2605:e000:af16:3b00:

Dear members,

I noticed this vase sold for more than 2,000 USD on eBay yesterday. The seller advertised as Kangxi Period, but I am thinking it is more likely late 19th Century due to stiff and somewhat clumsy decoration and the orange peel glaze (not sure if that was used in 17th/18th centuries). What do you think?

Thank you

Bokaba

Apart from the imprecise decoration, the white glaze on the base is too clean looking for commercial kilns of the Kangxi era or 19th-early 20th century, in my opinion. Here are some images of a couple of early 20th century Kangxi style melon jars that wound up as lamps. The detailing of the mythical creatures and borders is quite immaculate, which seems to indicate that top quality decoration was still in the realm of possibility at the time. Nowadays, I tend to believe that prices like the rouleau vase brought on eBay at being driven by buyers who either don't know what they're bidding on, or who plan on reselling it to such ill-informed buyers.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Dear Bokaba

I believe in your vase the double ring around the mark has been printed on. That makes it pretty inescapably modern I think.

You are right about the stiffness of the decoration; the little houses on the throat are too stiff even for the 19th century, I feel.

Kind regards
J.Lim
